The average individual in the developed world easily spends 30-40% of their waking hours in front of a screen, either a computer or a TV. The state of reality and awareness created in these environments doesn't exist. It is a shared collective narrative of concepts or representations strung together by ourselves or others for work or entertainment. Think about it, your world is already pretty virtual. Reality shock is what happens when the power goes out and the real steps in, you feel disconnected and a loss of symbolic power, (the ability to manipulate and control symbolic environments).
Here is a fascinating video showing how reality is manufactured with Green screens, I worked with green screen for some marketing videos I helped produce a few years as part of an advanced media research project. It was fun stuff.
For $30-$70 you can play with similar technology, try out the Green Screen Photography Kit or 123 Video Magic.
