Understanding sources of sustained value, processes and relative value, thinking about systemic risk and figuring out how economic processes evolve and unfold over time is fun stuff for me.
As a L/S equity & global macro hedge fund portfolio manager
Period #1 (2007-2009)*
As an analyst I managed a carve out for a New York based L/S equity hedge fund. No leverage was used. The average cash balance held was 56% of AUM.
Performance was top 1% of all hedge funds globally during the 2008-09 market crash. The allocation strategy is scalable. Nick Gogerty has designed institutional index products in the past and worked on quantitative institutional trading desks allocating +$100m in the past but prefers the globally scalable Nature of Value approach to understanding sources of innovation and moats leading to fundamental value creation.
The “Nature of Value” is due for publication by the Columbia University Press in Fall 2012. The book explains a process for understanding sources of value creation as complex adaptive systems similar to evolving ecologies.
I have built start-up companies, managed advanced scientific research for Starlab, helped technology and marketing starts ups, managed a hedge fund portfolio. Other writing includes the blog Designing Better futures, Seeking alpha and a forth coming book.
If you are risk manager or interested in systems thinking and risk join the Black swan group on Linkedin. The group focuses on normal accidents, resilience, systems thinking, cascading failures and other topics of financial risk at the market and systemic levels.
I grew up in small town Iowa, studied cultural anthropology and art history at the University of Iowa (go hawkeyes) and received an MBA from the ENPC in Paris, France and hold the CAIA designation. Along the way I’ve been lucky to live in Paris, London, Denmark, Sweden, Belgium, Dubai, Chicago, La Jolla, New York and Greenwich, CT with my wife.
